CUTS014: Mix for a Dead Cat by DJ Truffles

CUTS014: Mix for a Dead Cat by DJ Truffles

DJ Truffles based in Malmö, Sweden, is our next featured selector. We have seen and experienced his passionate quest for songs up close, and it can best be described with the image of a wild boar, rooting through the ground, aggressively flipping over entire mats of forest floor in search of the tasty and potentially magical bonbons underneath. Truffles spread through fungivores, animals that eat them. So sit back, relax, and just let the fruiting bodies of the subterran fungi in this mix manifold through you. Nature must have its way.

The mix is a dedication to his loveable cat Tove that tragically passed away this summer.

Big ups to graphic designer and illustrator Tobias Gutmann for his wonderfully swirly artwork.

CUTS013: Manipulation of Receptors by Nixxon

CUTS013: Manipulation of Receptors by Nixxon

When digging deep into the virtual record crates of the Internet, we have, more than once, found ourselves stumbling upon the phenomenal Overfitting disco website. One of the main alchemists of this digital witches’ brew of psychedelic obscurities is Copenhagen’s own Nikolaj Birgens aka Nixxon, who is also the person behind our next mix!

In the light of this we found it mysterious that when you google “place where you always end up” the top-result is titled something with Copenhagen and contains a quote saying “You may not always end up where you thought you were going, but you always end up where you are meant to be”. We’re not sure what all this means, but we felt we had to ask Nixxon for a mix. The fact that he is one of Denmark’s most unpredictable and ambitious DJs is of course a very tasty icing on the cake!

And thanks a lot to Amsterdam based young and promising artist, Warhammer specialist and de-coder, Juan de Porras-Isla, forever stimulating and exalting to the spirit, for the fantastic artwork!

CUTS012: Long Hair Silky Flow By Gentle Cuts

It’s mix time again! Only, this time around we’re presenting a mix we’ve done ourselves and not someone else’s.

Dream Chimney chose to feature our tenderly knitted blanket of dreamy hippie jazz as part of their inspiring “Mix of the Week” thing they’ve got going there. Let it keep you warm as you drift away.

CUTS011: Dialects for Peace by Sacha Mambo

Now and then we ask our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends to do a mix for us. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it, creating this beautiful blend between music and art.

The summer may now be long gone, but in the middle of a summer night in a small limestone quarry on the island of Gotland, Sweden, the sounds of the ever so productive Sacha Mambo echoed amongst seashells and rauks. We were there. It was beatiful and we had to ask Sacha for a mix.

As one half of the Macadam Mambo imprint, with Dialects for Peace, the Lyon-based eclectic digger invites us to an evocative journey into music.

Big ups to paper cut wizard Liam Stevens for the fabulous artwork!

Time to wake the good ol’ house nerve with this beautiful mix by Vichy Nouveau. Turn on your mind, get up and step upstream to the diva house rhythm. Never in the history of Gentle Cuts has the term “booyah” been more appropriate.

Now and then we ask our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends to do a mix for us. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it, creating this beautiful blend between music and art.

It must be wonderful to be Adrian Radway. Always inspiring, unpredictable and full of emotions. Come to think of it, it’s not a coincidence that he’s one of the operators behind the unbreakable music label Emotion. This time, with J, he’s showcasing his patented uncompromising (and somewhat eclectic) love for music.

And! Humongous hugs and thousands of high fives to our dear friend Greta Colloca for the artwork. You’re awesome!

Parisian DJ, music producer and curator Pierre Colleu is the magical music selector this time. With an overall new agey vibe Pierre invites us to his inner rhythms. Rhythms that may not get your body to shake like crazy, but your brain and spirit to twerk and breakdance at the same time.

Please listen to and watch the work of Baptiste & Pierre Colleu.

And a huge round of applause to Tim Lahan for the very fitting cover art.

Now and then we ask our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends to do a mix for us. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it, creating this beautiful blend between music and art.

Shortly after posting “Blue Dollar” by Molly Nilsson on the blog we contacted her. The initial reason for this was that we felt guilty for posting her new single without permission. We asked for the permission, and she said “Sure!”. With hubris in our system we also asked her to do a mix, and here we are. Hubris can be good sometimes. Jumping between swedish teen-punk and breathtaking german hardtechno, this mix will take you places.

Make sure to check out Molly’s new Sólo Paraíso – The Summer Songs EP. She’s the best.

Big, big hugs and thanks to illustrator Marion Guillet for the artwork.

Now and then we ask our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends to do a mix for us. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it, creating this beautiful blend between music and art.

Our friend Ludvig Franzén took a nice backstroke in his crates and threw together this crazy cozy collection of soulful masterpieces. There are flutes, congas and funk. It’s “Basic Original”! Aside from his fantastic work in graphic design, Ludvig has contributed to the original soundtrack of digital culture documentary PressPausePlay and may occasionally be seen going apeshit behind his DJ mixer surrounded by (and under the influence of) cheap beer in your favorite Stockholm bar.

The artwork is made by pencil genius Clay Hickson.

CUTS004: Levitation by Sophia Knapp

CUTS004: Levitation by Sophia Knapp

It’s guest mix time! Now and then we ask our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends to do a mix for us. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it, creating this beautiful blend between music and art.

Today’s guest is the somewhat West Coast sounding but Brooklyn-based pop gem Sophia Knapp. Earlier this spring she released her album “Into the Waves”, one of this year’s most elegant and heartfelt records. Those are two keywords that Gentle Cuts value highly. So, we contacted Sophia, asked her to do a mix and she did. Now, it’s an honor to present “Levitation” – a collection of songs that will help you float away over snow-covered landscapes into brighter times (maybe into the waves).

The creator behind the cover is illustrator and collage connoisseur Olof Svenblad. When we sent Olof’s artwork to Sophia, she was astonished by how much it resembled a tarot card that she had been meditating on lately. With that telepathic super-fact in mind, this really feels like destiny.

CUTS003: Mushroom Soup by Eden Rock

CUTS003: Mushroom Soup by Eden Rock

Hey! Today we’re glad to introduce a new feature to the Gentle Cuts game. From now, we will begin to quite sporadically publish guest mixes by some of our favourite DJs, producers, musicians and friends. With every mix, we also ask some of our favourite illustrators, artists, graphic designers and friends to do the artwork for it. Exciting, huh?

First off in the Gentle Cuts guest mix franchise are the wonderful Eden Rock who got our immediate attention a few years ago with their feel good bonanza disco track “A Splendored Lovething”. Now it’s time for the Mushroom Soup mix – a soothing but exalted ride through the autumn mist.
The artwork is made by french graphic designer and wonderman Pierre Vanni.

CUTS001: Naked Fridays Mix By Gentle Cuts

By the end of the summer 2011, Gentle Cuts got a mail from Ted Shumaker from Viva Radio. The radio station whose excellent musical choices you hear when shopping in your local American Apparel shop. He liked us, we asked if we could do a mix for his radio show and we did. We were like “FUCK YEAH!” and here it is! One hour long. Ranging from creepy italo to Bollywood.
